This Year’s CAS Scholarship Judge: Gladys Drummonds

Gladys Drummonds’ artistic journey began in childhood, sparked by a natural talent and deep love for creativity. Over the last 60 years, she has continued to nurture this passion, becoming a primarily self-taught artist specializing in oil painting, watercolor, and acrylics.

After earning her degree in Elementary Education in 1965, Gladys began teaching art as part of her teaching certification—unknowingly planting the seeds for a lifelong dedication to the arts, both as a creator and a mentor.

While self-taught in many ways, Gladys has continued to expand her skills and knowledge by taking numerous classes from both local and nationally known artists, exploring a wide range of techniques and mediums. Her openness to learning reflects her belief that art is a lifelong journey.

Several of her paintings have been acquired by the River Raisin National Battlefield Park in Monroe, Michigan, and will be showcased in its grand reopening gala on June 20, 2025.

Gladys is also an active member of the Magic Brush in Monroe and the longest-standing member and past president of the Monroe Art League, where her work has been featured in many exhibits and juried shows. Her art has been sold at local art shows and displayed at spot shows in restaurants and businesses across Monroe and the surrounding areas. She currently shares her passion through teaching watercolor art classes through the Monroe Art League at the United Way in Monroe and the Frenchtown Center for Active Adults - continuing to inspire artists of all ages.

Thank you, Gladys

CAS would like to acknowledge Gladys Drummonds with a huge thank you for serving as a judge for our annual CAS scholarship competition. As a lifelong artist and mentor, her insight, passion, and artistic eye brought incredible value to the selection process.

Both students and fellow artists deeply appreciate the time and care she shared. Her dedication to nurturing creativity and supporting emerging talent continues to inspire us all.

Thank you, Gladys, for helping shape the next generation of artists!

7. Photographing Your Artwork

Camera raphael-lovaski.jpg

For free-hanging artwork
Hang your artwork on the wall. Light your work properly

  • If you are shooting your work indoors, do so in a room with plenty of windows and natural light.

  • Adjust your camera and settings. If your art piece is flat, try to photograph the entire art piece. Be sure no outside edges are exposed in the photograph.

  • Edit your photos to perfection and save them as 2 MB jpeg files.

    For free-standing artwork
A single light is often all you need, which makes photographing your work even easier.

  • Set up your light stand and angle the light straight down.

  • Position the light so it is directly above the subject. This will create a nice shadow under the bottom edge and will help ground the object.

  • Edit and crop your photos to perfection and save them as 2 MB jpeg files.
